Answer Engine Optimization, Explained

SEO got you ranked. AEO gets you quoted. What answer engine optimization is, how AI answer engines decide whom to mention, and the three things to do first.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI-powered answer engines to understand, trust, and quote. Answer engines include Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. They don’t hand people a list of ten links; they give an answer, often naming a few businesses. AEO is about being one of them.

For two decades, getting found online meant ranking high enough on a page of blue links that someone clicked you. That game still exists. But for a growing share of your customers, it isn’t the first one they play.

Why it matters now

When someone asks an answer engine “who’s a good accountant for a small business in Ventura County?”, they get a short answer with a couple of names and maybe a link or two. If the engine can’t confidently understand your business, you’re simply not in that answer, and there’s no page two to fall back on.

This is already happening at scale. Google shows AI Overviews on a large share of searches, and AI assistants are now everyday tools for millions of people. Many of those conversations end in a decision: a call, a booking, a purchase.

How answer engines decide whom to mention

Answer engines don’t “rank” in the traditional sense. They gather information from search indexes and the web, then compose an answer from the sources they trust most. In practice, they favor:

  • Clear, direct answers. Passages that answer the question in a sentence or two are easy to quote.
  • Consistent facts. The same name, services, hours, and prices across your site, Google Business Profile, and directories.
  • Machine-readable structure. Headings, structured data, and clean HTML that remove guesswork.
  • Credibility signals. Reviews, links, mentions, and real expertise.
  • Accessibility to crawlers. Fast pages that AI crawlers are allowed to read and can read without errors.

A language model doesn’t see your hero image or your brand colors. It parses structure and text. When information is missing or contradictory, it fills the gaps with guesses, or skips you for a competitor it can understand with confidence.

The three things to do first

You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. The highest-leverage work is narrow:

1. Add structured data

Mark up your organization, hours, services, and prices so your business is unambiguous. Our guide to the structured data that makes agents book you covers the five types that matter most.

2. Rewrite your key pages answer-first

Start with your main service pages and the ten questions customers ask most. Answer each in the first sentence, then add the depth that proves you know your stuff.

3. Publish an llms.txt file

A short, plain-language map of what your site is and what matters on it. It’s small, low-risk, and makes your site easier for AI tools to use. Here’s how to write one.

Then make sure your booking and contact flows are something an AI agent could complete. That’s the next frontier, covered in Agentic Checkout Is Coming.

How AEO relates to SEO

AEO doesn’t replace SEO; it’s built on it. Answer engines rely on the same foundations: helpful content, solid technical health, and authority. The differences are in format, consistency, and measurement. We break that down in AEO vs. SEO: What Changes, What Stays.

How to know it’s working

There’s no single dashboard yet. Track AI referral traffic, run a monthly prompt panel of real customer questions, and check that what AI says about you is accurate. Here’s a simple way to track AI citations.

The ongoing part

Answer engines change constantly, with new models, new features, and new sources. Getting quoted once is good; staying quotable takes ongoing attention. That’s what every SEO plan includes: SEO and AEO together, on a fast site we host and maintain. See our AI SEO service or get started.
