What Is an Agent-Ready Website?

AI agents now research, compare, and book on people's behalf. What an agent-ready website is, how agents read and use sites, and a checklist to get yours ready.

An agent-ready website is one that AI agents can understand and act on: they can find your key facts, compare you fairly, and complete tasks like booking or buying without getting stuck. It’s the natural next step after being readable by search engines and quotable by AI assistants. The visitor reading your site is increasingly not a person, but software working for one.

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is software that takes actions for a person, not just answers questions. Ask an assistant to “find a plumber who can come tomorrow morning and book them,” and an agent may search, open several websites, compare availability and reviews, fill out a booking form, and come back for your approval.

Every major AI company is building these capabilities into its assistants and browsers. They’re early and imperfect, but improving fast, and the direction is clear: more of the research, comparison, and transactions that people do on websites will be delegated.

How agents experience your website

Agents read websites in a few ways, often in combination:

  • Reading the page’s text and structure, the way a search crawler does
  • Reading structured data that states facts like hours, prices, and services in a standard format
  • Operating the page visually, clicking buttons and typing into fields, the way a person would
  • Following links and summaries like an llms.txt file to find the right pages

Whatever the method, agents behave like your most impatient visitor. They don’t guess, they don’t push through confusion, and they don’t come back. If a fact is missing or a form is ambiguous, they move on to a competitor that’s clearer.

What makes a website agent-ready

Clear, consistent facts

Your services, prices or price ranges, hours, location, service area, and policies should be stated plainly in text, not hidden in images, PDFs, or “call for details.” They should also match everywhere they appear: your site, your Google Business Profile, and directories.

Meaningful structure

One clear H1 per page, logical headings, real lists and tables, and semantic HTML that describes what each part of the page is. The same structure that helps screen readers helps agents.

Structured data

Schema markup for your business, services, offers, hours, FAQs, and booking actions turns your key facts into unambiguous data. Here’s the structured data that matters most.

Forms and flows an agent can finish

Labeled fields, sensible defaults, guest options, clear errors, and an unmistakable confirmation. Booking and checkout should work on your own domain without fragile pop-ups. See Agentic Checkout Is Coming for more.

A machine-readable summary

An llms.txt file gives AI tools a plain-language overview of your business and links to the pages that matter.

Speed and stability

Fast pages that don’t shift around while loading are easier for agents to read and operate, and they score better with search engines too.

Access for legitimate AI crawlers

Check that your robots.txt and security settings allow the AI crawlers you want to read your site, while still protecting your forms from abuse.

A quick agent-readiness checklist

  • Services, prices, hours, and location stated in plain text
  • Details consistent across your site, Business Profile, and directories
  • One H1 per page; logical H2 and H3 headings
  • Structured data for your business, services, hours, FAQs, and booking
  • Booking or contact form with labeled fields and a clear confirmation
  • No essential information locked in images or PDFs
  • An llms.txt file at the root of your site
  • Pages load fast on mobile (95+ PageSpeed is a good target)
  • AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt

Do you need to rebuild your site?

Not necessarily. Many of these changes can be made to an existing site. But if your site runs on a heavy theme or page builder, buries information in images, or relies on fragile third-party widgets, it’s often faster and cheaper to rebuild than to patch. If you like your current design, it can be rebuilt on a cleaner foundation so it looks the same and works far better.

How we do it

Agent-readiness is built into every site we host, including our $99 Foundation plan: semantic HTML, structured data, llms.txt, labeled forms, and fast pages on our own static stack. SEO plans keep it current as agents and standards evolve. Learn more about agent-ready websites, or get started and we’ll show you how an AI agent experiences your site today.
