AEO vs. SEO: What Changes, What Stays

Spoiler: you need both. How answer engine optimization relates to classic SEO, what's genuinely new, and what still matters as much as ever.

SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, gets your business quoted in the answers AI tools give. They aren’t competing strategies: AEO is built on top of SEO, and most of the work serves both. What changes is the goal, the format, and how you measure success.

Quick definitions

  • SEO (search engine optimization): making your website easy for search engines to find, understand, and rank, so people click through to you.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): making your business easy for AI-powered answer engines (Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity) to understand, trust, and cite when they answer someone’s question.

You’ll also see the terms GEO (generative engine optimization) and AI SEO. They describe essentially the same idea.

What stays the same

If you’ve been doing SEO well, you’re already most of the way there. These fundamentals matter just as much for answer engines:

  • Helpful, accurate content written by people who know the subject
  • Clear site structure with descriptive headings and internal links
  • Technical health: fast pages that are crawlable and indexable, with no broken links
  • Authority: links, mentions, and reviews from credible sources
  • Consistent business information across your site, Google Business Profile, and directories

Answer engines lean on search indexes and the same quality signals. A site that’s slow, thin, or hard to crawl rarely gets cited.

What changes

SEO AEO
The goal A ranking and a click A mention or citation inside an answer
The unit of success A page A fact, passage, or recommendation
Content format Comprehensive pages targeting keywords Answer-first passages that can be quoted on their own
What wins ties Relevance and authority Clarity, consistency, and verifiability
Structured data Helpful for rich results Essential for unambiguous facts
Measurement Rankings, impressions, clicks Mentions, citations, accuracy, AI referrals

The biggest practical shift is format. Answer engines pull passages, not pages. A paragraph that directly answers a question in its first sentence is far more likely to be used than the same information buried in the middle of a long introduction.

The second shift is consistency. An answer engine assembles its picture of your business from many sources at once. If your hours, services, or prices differ between your website and your directory listings, the model hedges or skips you.

What’s genuinely new

A few things don’t have a classic SEO equivalent:

  • Entity clarity: making sure AI systems understand your business as one well-defined thing (name, category, location, services) rather than a loose collection of pages.
  • Machine-readable summaries: files like llms.txt that tell AI systems what your site is and which pages matter.
  • Action readiness: AI agents don’t just read; they act. Booking and checkout flows that an agent can complete are becoming part of being “found.” See what makes a site agent-ready.
  • Citation tracking: there’s no Search Console for ChatGPT yet, so you need your own way to track AI citations.

So which should you focus on?

Both, in this order:

  1. Fix the SEO foundation. Speed, structure, indexing, and helpful content. Without it, AEO has nothing to stand on.
  2. Rewrite key pages answer-first. Start with your main service pages and most common customer questions.
  3. Add structured data and make your facts consistent everywhere.
  4. Measure both: rankings and clicks in Search Console, mentions and citations with a monthly prompt panel.
